A long journey to an uncertain end

The Setting

A Long Journey to an Uncertain End is a narrative space opera built in Unity, released on Steam and Nintendo Switch. The game has you soaring around the universe assembling an unruly crew from an eclectic cast of characters. Take any job you can to keep one step ahead of your abusive ex, and keep flying towards freedom. Players manage their crew, make tough narrative choices that branch the story in meaningful ways, and explore a richly crafted galaxy full of diverse worlds and characters. The game tackles important themes of resilience and self-discovery while delivering compelling space exploration gameplay.

My Role Alongside Crispy Creative

As a contracted lead developer working with the Crispy Creative studio, I contributed to the gameplay systems and technical implementation that bring this emotionally charged adventure to life. My responsibilities included developing the crew management system where each character has unique abilities, personalities, and relationship dynamics that affect mission outcomes. I implemented the mission flow architecture — the system that manages job selection, task assignment, crew deployment, and outcome resolution based on crew stats and player choices. I worked on the narrative integration layer, ensuring that the branching story structure maintained consistency across dozens of decision points while surfacing meaningful consequences to the player at the right moments. I also contributed to the UI systems for crew management screens, galaxy navigation, and dialogue presentation, working closely with the art team to ensure that every interface element matched the game's vibrant, hand-illustrated visual style. Additionally, I was involved in the Nintendo Switch porting process, adapting the Unity project to meet Nintendo's technical requirements and performance standards.

Architecting a Branching Story That Doesn't Break

The branching narrative architecture was one of the most technically complex aspects of the project. The game features a story with dozens of interconnected decision points where player choices create ripple effects across subsequent chapters. Managing this narrative state required a robust system that could track flags, relationship values, resource levels, and story progression without introducing contradictions or dead-end states. I worked with the narrative designers to implement a state machine approach where each story beat validates its preconditions before executing, preventing impossible narrative states from occurring. The crew management system presented its own challenges, as character abilities needed to interact with mission parameters in ways that felt fair and transparent to the player while maintaining enough complexity to reward strategic crew assignment. Performance optimization for the Nintendo Switch was a significant undertaking — the game's richly illustrated 2D environments with layered parallax effects, particle systems, and animated character portraits needed to run smoothly within the Switch's more limited hardware capabilities compared to PC. I implemented texture atlas optimization, draw call batching, and memory management improvements specifically targeted at the Switch's architecture.

Shipping on Steam and Switch

A Long Journey to an Uncertain End released on both Steam and Nintendo Switch. Working as a contracted developer within Crispy Creative's existing creative vision, rather than owning the whole project, was a different kind of challenge from my solo work: building the crew-management and branching-narrative systems to spec, then adapting the whole project to Nintendo Switch's hardware constraints. That porting experience is one of the more specialized skills I've picked up across all these projects.
